Start at the Beaches Town Center

Where Atlantic Beach meets Neptune Beach, a few blocks of walkable restaurants sit a short stroll from the ocean. This is the densest concentration of good casual food in the region, and it is the right place to start a burger education.

Poe Tavern is the one locals name first. It is an Edgar Allan Poe themed pub where the burgers carry literary names, the patio catches the ocean breeze, and the whole thing is exactly as unpretentious as it sounds. Order, take a number, sit outside. If you only get one burger on your first trip here, this is a safe and correct choice.

The neighborhood around it rewards wandering. Irish pubs, Latin kitchens, taco spots and a couple of places that have been there long enough that the regulars have assigned seats. It is a short walk from the sand and it feels like a small town, which is most of the appeal.

M Shack and the Chef-Burger Thing

M Shack came out of Atlantic Beach from the Medure brothers, who are serious restaurant people, and the concept is what happens when chefs who could be doing fine dining decide to make a really good burger and a really good milkshake instead.

It grew to multiple Jacksonville area locations, which tells you how the reception went. It reads casual, but the execution is not casual, and it is the answer when you want a burger that is genuinely good rather than just satisfying.

The Loop Is the Local Institution

The Loop Pizza Grill started in Jacksonville in the early 1980s and grew into a regional chain, and while the name says pizza, a lot of Jacksonville natives will tell you they go for the burgers and the shakes. It is the place people take their grandkids, and it is the place people who grew up here have a decades-long relationship with.

That matters when you are new to a region. Eating where the locals have history is how you start understanding a place.

The Brewery Burger Category

This is where the region has quietly gotten very good. Jacksonville and the beaches developed a real craft beer scene, and a lot of those taprooms either run a solid kitchen or park a good food truck out front permanently.

The pattern to look for: a taproom in an industrial building with a chalkboard menu and eight burgers on it. Those kitchens are frequently better than the beer, which is saying something. Brewery rosters and food partners change often enough that the right move is to check what is currently operating rather than trust a list.

Jacksonville Neighborhood Pubs

Cross the Intracoastal into Jacksonville proper and the burger lives in the neighborhood bar. San Marco, Riverside, Avondale and Murray Hill all have small places with a bar, a handful of booths, a short menu and a burger they have been making the same way for fifteen years.

These are the hardest to find and the most rewarding. They do not market. They are usually in a building from the 1950s with a sign that has been repainted twice. If you are spending a Saturday in Riverside or walking San Marco Square, ask whoever is behind the bar at the first place you stop where they go on their day off. That question has never once failed me.

South Toward St. Augustine and North Toward Amelia

St. Augustine has burgers, but the historic district is priced and menued for visitors. The better strategy there is to get off St. George Street and out toward the neighborhoods along US 1 or over on Anastasia Island, where the prices and the portions both improve.

Fernandina Beach is the opposite. Centre Street is genuinely good and the locals eat there too, so you can follow the crowd without getting burned. The waterfront bars up there do a solid pub burger and you get a view of the Amelia River with it.

How to Read a First Coast Burger Menu

A few local conventions that will save you some confusion.

• If a place is known for seafood, the burger is usually still good, because a kitchen that can cook fish to temperature can cook beef to temperature
• Datil pepper shows up on menus around St. Augustine, where it has a long local history. It is hotter than it looks and it is worth trying once
• Anywhere within sight of the ocean, expect a fish sandwich next to the burger on the menu, and expect it to be legitimately good
• Ordering a burger medium is normal here and most kitchens will honor it
• Beach town parking is the actual difficulty, not the food. Go before six or plan to walk a few blocks
